description Recruiting new employees is becoming more and more complex in a context marked with accelerating changes as well as numerous and diverse uncertainties on the quality of the labor force, particularly in businesses where the organization of work is undergoing major changes. Based on the results of a qualitative study conducted with thirty Canadian businesses located in the Quebec City region, this article analyses 1) the labor force selection criteria used by participating companies which place emphasis on the diploma, professional experience and individual qualities, and 2) the evaluation process of the candidates’ skills upon hiring in the recruitment process. We show that the diploma progressively loses its value in the work place and that experience has become a naturalized component of the skill with varying content according to the subjective evaluation of recruiters.
