description Abstract Syracus: Religious buildings and their historico-cultural background The following paper gives a historical view about the Dome of Syracus, from ist beginning as a greek temple, then his change into a roman sanctuary and then the transformation into a church. It also describes the architecture in- and outside the Dome, giving a perfect cross-section of its history. Crypt of Marcian, Church and Catacombs of Hl. John give a view on early christian life on Sicily. Besides the description of these object I tried to give a short introduction to the beginning of chritianisation and martyrdom.
