description | Serious chronic illness represents a major disruption for those suffering from it and for their relatives. Among all the implications flowing from such a condition, medical treatments can particularly affect physical abilities, sexuality, aesthetic norms and, fundamentally, all the dimensions of the bodily and gendered identity. The purpose of this contribution is to explore the consequences of these transformations in the particular case of breast cancer. By analysing the narratives of women who are involved in two patients’ organisations in Belgium, the study aims to understand the reasons that bring them together to share their experiences of renegotiating embodiment and «feminity», as well as the self-management processes of «living with» severe chronic illness. It particularly stresses the narratives that may be privileged – or that, on the contrary, remain silent within these collectives – in order to make public their illness experiences and the transformations of the self, especially about sexuality and maternity projects and body «asymmetry» after breast cancer surgery. The study concludes that the complexity of these experiences, the normative ambivalence of the narratives and the heterogeneity of the political issues at stake highlight that the processes of reappropriation of their bodies and collectivisation of suffering are plural and sometimes contradictory, which is not without consequences in terms of demands and mobilisations around common struggles in these patients’ organisations. |
