| description | <p><strong>RESUMEN</strong></p><p>En este artículo me propongo presentar algunos rasgos de la vida de este pintor, y analizar lo quesignifi caba ser un ejercitante de las bellas artes para una persona de color en la Cartagena de Indiasde fi nales del siglo XVIII. Los rasgos biográfi cos de este pintor permiten ver cómo era la sociedadcartagenera de la Colonia tardía, las aspiraciones de estos hombres de color, y los medios que emplearonen procura de mejorar el estatus social. El artículo está organizado en tres apartes. En elprimero expongo algunas ideas generales sobre la sociedad cartagenera de finales del siglo XVIIIy la importancia que tuvo la vida miliciana para los artesanos de esta ciudad. En el segundo abordolas relaciones entre el arte de la pintura y los demás ofi cios artesanales. Y en el tercero presento una semblanza biográfica de Pablo Caballero.</p><p><strong>Palabras clave:</strong></p><p>Arte, Pintura, Colonia, Cartagena, Historia, Cultura, Artesanos, Bellas artes.</p><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p>In this paper I will present some features of the life of this painter, and analyze what it meant to bean exercising of fi ne arts for a person of color in Cartagena de Indias in the late eighteenth century.Through the biographical features of this painter, someone can see how society was in late colonialCartagena, the aspirations of these men of color, and the means they employed in an attempt toimprove the social status. The paper is organized into three parts. In the fi rst I present some generalideas about society from the late eighteenth Cartagena and the importance that life for artisans ofthis city. The second board relations between the art of painting and other crafts.
