description | EVA & ADELE are an Austrian-German artist couple who cultivate an almost twin-like resemblance, making their bodies and, more broadly, their lives the material of their art. Confusing the blurred boundaries between gender and sex, masculine and feminine, EVA & ADELE form an entity that is both male and female, woman and non-binary, hyperfeminine and bald, transgender and lesbian, and, while neither is intersex, they declare themselves 'the hermaphroditic twins of the future'. Looking back at the biographical and artistic elements of their process, this article shows how EVA & ADELE succeed together in making a transition to a dual form combining their two beings, escaping gender through the implementation of devices that accompany or cause identity changes in their lives and representations. |
