Summary: | The aim of this paper is on the one hand to reconstitute the definition of the virtue of courage from the elements unrefuted by Socrates in the Laches. This aim is reached through a detailed examination of the discussion on the definitions suggested by Laches and Nicias, thus permitting to better understand the second part of the dialogue (190d-199e). On the other hand, this article illustrates the multiple aspects of the definition of courage, which is obtained thanks to the portrait that Plato draws of Socrates in the Apology; in doing so we discuss his military, intellectual as well as political courage. |
