description The "subprime" credit crisis started in 2007 in the USA was the most eloquent example of the fact that stability and proper functioning of the banking system of a country is essential. It was obvious that when this adverse phenomenon occurred, the Romanian banking system was characterized by pronounced vulnerability, induced by a number of previous and unremedied deficiencies. The purpose of this article is to identify these failures and for this purpose, an analysis will be made on the evolution of the non-government credit in the period prior to the economic and financial crisis, taking into account the level of the credit standards at the time. It will also be analyzed the evolution of the credit risk and progression of other important banking indicators, identifying the negative effects of a possibly wrong direction of the Romanian banking system in the period prior to the recent economic and financial crisis.
