description | Objectives:In this study, investigation of the histopathologic and microbiologic changes in acute sinusitis was aimed and animal model was planned accordingly. Methods:This study was conducted by rhinogenic method using Streptococcus pneumoniae type 14. On one side of the nasal cavities of the twenty New Zealand rabbits, a foreign body impregnated with serum physiologic and on the other side a foreign body impregnated with bacteria were placed and afterwards, the sacrification of 5 animals weekly was planned. Both histopathologic and microbiologic assessment was applied to the both side of the nasal and paranasal sinuses to all of the sample animals. Results:In histopathologic evaluation of the first two weeks, neutrophil leucocyts, rare lymphocyts and plasma cells were seen on mucosal and submucosal tissue. However, in the third and fourth weeks, an intensive increase in lymphocyts and plasma cells was observed. In bacteriologic investigation apart from Streptococcus pneumoniae, E. coli, beta-hemolytic streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus were identified. Conclusion:Histopathologically generated sinusitis in all of the animals and the histopathological conclusions were consistent with the natural prognosis of the infection and literature information. |
