Description
Summary:In this article, I study St. Thomas Aquinas’ usage of instinctus in relation to the gifts of the Holy Spirit by comparing his earlier work the Scriptum super Sententiis to his later work the Summa theologiae. This examination of the uses of instinctus reveals a meaningful development in the thought of St. Thomas on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Then, I consider St. Thomas’ use of instinctus in other works that concern the issue of Semi-Pelagianism and the doctrine surrounding the preparation for justification. This consideration uncovers the importance of the movement of God in preparation for justification. Lastly, I relate this development on preparation for justification to his mature teaching on the preparation for justification and the gifts of the Spirit in order to show that the increased use of the term instinctus in the Summa theologiae signifies that St. Thomas considerably developed his teaching on the gifts of the Holy Spirit during the course of his life.
