Description
Summary:Every language provides a particular set of metaphors through which its speakers approach their environment (Ó Laoire, 2005). Every language also has an external image – the way in which it is perceived by speakers and non-speakers. Audiovisual media in general, and television in particular, influence both these aspects of a language’s image, making it more visible and accelerating linguistic evolution. Based on case studies of TG4 in Ireland (PhD thesis) and Māori Television in New Zealand, I have examined how these factors can influence a language’s image. This paper investigates whether this approach may be relevant in the case of the Breton language in the contemporary audiovisual media.
