Pulmonary embolism in an adolescent with May-Thurner syndrome and Factor V Leiden mutation requiring IVC filter placement and mechanical/pharmacologic thrombolysis

May-Thurner syndrome is an uncommon cause of lower extremity deep venous thrombi caused by compression of the left iliac vein in between the right iliac artery and the vertebrae that results in venous insufficiency. This case report describes an adolescent male with significant lower extremity deep...

description May-Thurner syndrome is an uncommon cause of lower extremity deep venous thrombi caused by compression of the left iliac vein in between the right iliac artery and the vertebrae that results in venous insufficiency. This case report describes an adolescent male with significant lower extremity deep venous thrombi (DVTs) consistent with May-Thurner syndrome. His hospital course was complicated by pulmonary emboli, repeat procedures and stent placement, and recurrence of thrombi after discharge. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing May-Thurner syndrome as an uncommon cause of lower-extremity DVT, and close observation and prompt management of patients with DVTs.
