description | Introduction: Pseudomonas aeruginosa posseses the highest level of resistance to antibiotics. The aim of the present study was to evaluate susceptibility profile of P. aeruginosa strains isolated from variety of clinical samples. Materials and Methods: One-hundred forty-two P. aeruginosa isolated from culture samples sent from various clinics to the Microbiology Laboratory from January 2012 to December 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. The samples were cultured in eosinmethylene blue (EMB) agar and 5% sheep blood agar. After identification of the microorganism using conventional methods, antibiotic susceptibility of the strains was determined using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method in accordance with the principles of Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Results: Most of the isolates were recruited from sputum samples (34.5%). The highest rate of the isolates was obtained from the pulmonary disease clinic (24.6%) and general surgery clinic (23.2%). The resistance of antibiotics is as follows: gentamycin 30%, amikacin 19%, ceftazidime 24%, cefepime 19%, aztreonam 20%, piperacillin-tazobactam 10%, ciprofloxacin 45%, and levofloxacin 23%. No resistance to imipenem and meropenem was determined. Conclusion: Although P. aeruginosa strains are generally associated with nosocomial infections, recently these strains are being isolated in a considerable number of specimens collected from the community. The results of this study suggested resistance to antibiotics, particularly to ciprofloxacin and gentamycine. No resistance to carbapenems was determined. Increasing antibiotic resistance is implicated in treatment complications and increasing health care costs. Therefore, similar studies must be conducted in state hospitals and every hospital should identify the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of its own prevailing strains, and their own antibiotic policies should be developed. |
