description This article presents three case studies on the question of gender, health and change. It describes findings from research projects on interventions working with men and boys in South Africa on issues of HIV, public health and gender. Each case study examines the underlying theories of masculinity, gender and gender change at work in these interventions and assesses the forms and impacts of these interventions. The article concludes with a reflection of the political and conceptual limitations of gender transformation work undertaken in the context of HIV, and on the need to complement ideological arguments for “gender transformation” with more embodied opportunities for transformed gendered practice.
