description Introduction: the training of scientific-research skills is one of the activities that guarantee the comprehensive development in medical students. Objective: to describe the training of scientific-research skills in medical students. Method: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted at "Pedro Borrás Astorga" University Polyclinic in Pinar del Río city from September 2017 to March 2018. The target group consisted of 316 students from the first and second academic years of medical studies. The results were presented in charts and statistical tables, making comparisons with other studies with reference to this topic. Results: the first academic year of medical studies and female sex prevailed in both academic years (66,3 % in the first) and (65,3 % in the second). Scientific conferences predominated as the main scientific-research activity (100 %), and the teaching of training activities (33,9 %). With respect to the scientific-investigative characteristics of medical students, 100 % presented the development of scientific research skills and work of tutors from the Primary Health Care, as well as the scientific work from the honorary staff and the assistantship, 27,5 % and 22,8 % of the students respectively, 14,9 % obtained awards in the research works presented. Conclusions: the training of scientific-research skills in medical students was described, which constitutes a fundamental tool in the sustainability and development of the primary health care level.
