description During the golden age of feudalism in the 11th and 12th centuries, lordly violence seems ubiquitous in the literary sources as well as the juridical ones. The case of the war of 1124-1125 between the lord of Montpellier and his liege the count of Melgueil is an exceptionally rich example of this reality. In a society without higher judicial body capable of judging disputes, violence is an integral component of the process of negotiations. It is a way of defending one’s claims and compel the opponent to make concessions. This violence is subject to some limitations and takes the form of property damage or capture rather than murder. The social pressure, notably from common friends, ends it by inviting the warring parties to a compromise where the stated goal is the grudges’ settlement.
