description | In this article, I discuss the role of sound in music exhibitions, especially as related to the display of musical instruments. On the basis of field research conducted in the Musée de la musique in Paris, the Musical Instruments Museum (MIM) in Brussels, and the Music Collection at the Munich City Museum, I discuss different technological methods for integrating sound into music exhibitions, such as portable and stationary systems, live music, or interactive hands-on stations, the effects they have on visitors’ perception of the exhibitions, and how they are linked to exhibition narrative. I discuss the role of music, noise, and silence in music exhibitions as historically visually oriented sites and thereby problematize the issue of displaying the intangible “object” of music in a visually oriented museum. Furthermore, I discuss the role and potential of silence in music exhibitions.
