description | At the intersection of sociology and photographic practice, the present article focuses on appearance as an instrument of collective struggle. It highlights some fragments of a larger academic and artistic work initiated in the context of a practice-based PHD pursued simultaneously at Aix-Marseille Université and École nationale supérieure de la photographie in Arles, France. The challenge of this doctoral thesis, defended in 2017, was to establish connections between five subcultural communities (cosplayers, roller derby players, new-burlesque cabaret performers, voguers, and sappers) who invest appearance as a medium for social and political protests. The community members interviewed use their image as a resistance mechanism and question the validity and limits of societal norms. The methodological and artistic approach is strongly related to practice led research. They aim to consider the work of appearances and the photographic image as languages of their own, capable of providing a reflexive knowledge on social worlds. The sensitive part of reality, sometimes still stigmatized, is central in the understanding of the social dynamics involved in one' s image. |
