description Starting from a long-term ethnographic study (2014-2017) on Imider’s “on the road of 96” movement, this article questions the processes of politicization of marginalized communities. Located in southeastern Morocco, Imider is a small rural town in the vicinity of the largest silver deposit in Africa. Exploited by the Managem group, a subsidiary of the royal holding, the mining industry has faced a strong challenge from local communities since its installation in the 1970s. In particular, since 2011, residents have organized themselves around a movement: the movement “on the road of 96”, claiming the right to water and more generally a fair distribution of wealth. Activists of Imider occupied “Mont Alebban”, during the last nine years, and sabotaged the main water pump supplying the mine. Starting from an empirical study of the ways in which the “on the road of 96” movement has managed to impose itself in the public space and more broadly in the political field, the objective of this article is to inscribe the mobilizations of marginalized communities in a more global political analysis. The article aims to show how the study of the politics of and in the margins can help us understand more boarder processes of change and socio-political transformation in Morocco since 2011.
