Description
Summary:The article discusses both direct and indirect principles for the nomination of lepidopteronyms in English. As a result of the analysis, 102 lepidopteronyms with a transparent inner form of the word, based on different motivational indicators of the endocentric and exocentric types (according to the classification by O.P. Ryabko), were identified. Among the modification lexemes of lepidoptera macro-field the centre is taken by proper names and by the names of mythological characters as a component of lexical units. At the periphery, nuclear composites have been distinguished: lexical units representing the names of plants. In endocentric type of nomination, the most common motivational indicator of a lepidopteronym is the appearance of the butterfly: its size, shape and colour of its body or wings. The reference region is also represented by the butterfly’s habitat.
