description In the modern age, marriages were not interrupted only by the death of a spouse. Some evidence suggests that marital separation was not unknown. Husbands and wives, especially those belonging to the lower classes, separated bed and table either temporarily or permanently: most opted for an informal separation, brought about by running away, leaving one’s spouse or by reaching an agreement.
