description It is undoubtedly true that artificial lung ventilation (ALV), has been remaining the leading life-saving way of treating multiple varieties of respiratory system pathology for many years, covering acute conditions (acute pulmonary injury syndrome (APIS), acute respiratory distress, and respiratory distress) and chronic conditions (exacerbation of the severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, severe bronchial asthma, chronic respiratory failure). However, in critical cases, when the capacity of the ventilator is not powerful enough, the life-saving procedure of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is implemented. The article provides a detailed review of the historical aspects of ECMO technology development in Ukraine and abroad. Moreover, the structure of devices for ECMO, the main types of their connection to patients, and their advantages and disadvantages are covered in the article. The effectiveness of the ECMO procedure in different resuscitation and therapeutic conditions of patients are described. A comparative analysis of modern devices for ECMO is considered and carried out. In addition, the risks of ECMO and side effects after this procedure are identified. The ways of further use of ECMO to support patient life are identified.
