description | It would be inadequate to explain Rome as a capital only basing the analysis on urban planning, political supremacy or collective imagination. The way the roman power rules the empire and the occupied territories creates linkages, defines hierarchies and, as a matter of consequence, generates the status of Rome as capital. The urban landscape of Rome with various monuments is the result of this supremacy and the product of ideological models. Major steps are the Social War and its consequences in terms of citizenship, the Caesar’s urban program with hellenistic references, and the Julio-Claudian and Flavian periods creating a city of memories and wonders. |
