Moreover, by choosing elite and bourgeois sociability as a point of departure, the book offers no new insights into the changes in nineteenth-century political culture.</p><p> </p><p>This review is part of the <a href="/550/volume/129/issue/3/">discussion forum</a> 'Plaatsen van beschaafd vertier' (Jan Hein Furnée).</p><p><br />In zijn rijke studie <em>Plaatsen van beschaafd</em> vertier legt Jan Hein Furnée op voorbeeldige en inventieve wijze de elitecultuur van het negentiende-eeuwse Den Haag bloot. Hiermee zet hij een nieuwe standaard voor lokaal cultuurhistorisch onderzoek. De verdere meerwaarde van het boek is echter gering door het ontbreken van een vergelijkend perspectief.
