description | The archetypal Oedipal conflict of generations is immemorial: latent with the pandemic and the controversy about who gets priority for vaccination (the old over the young), it becomes obvious at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when the discovery of the New World made ours the Old, thus materializing and metaphorizing, in the whole of the arts and society, pairs of opposites realized as antitheses: new vs. revolved, modern vs. outmoded. Claiming invention and novelty against the old order, this Baroque cult of the new implies a new culture of time: from science to consciousness, the progressive improvements of the mirror and the clock giving a new perception of the self, from counted time to measured time, to be lived, and of an age that can be seen in a personal reflection: the fashion for self-portraits allows a distressing or consoling comparison with others. But the feeling of age transmits to youth the injustice of a patriarchal society where the greybeards reign, masters of power and fortune: the rivalry of father and son, antagonism between young and old, a certain vision of and an aversion for the elderly, a “youthism” that Rousseau will denounce at the twilight of the Baroque: archaeology of our modernity. |
