| Summary: | Culture is defined as material and spiritual values created in the social and historical
development process of societies and as the total of elements used in creating them and
transferring to future generations. Tradition is one of the important elements of culture.
Tradition, defined as an intangible cultural item transferred from generation to generation, in
fact, expresses opinions of a society on specific issues in the narrow sense and plays a role in
the regulation of social life. Generally it has impact on social institutions such as family, law
and religion. However; it occasionally has an impact on science and art. Certain elements of
the tradition stretches from past to future, lives distinctly in different cultures or leaves its
mark on modern narrative. Sometimes a clash of modern life with traditional elements can
be seen. Another fact is that traditional items survive in great harmony with the new situation
in the dizzy pace of modern world. In this study; crane motive, a part of popular culture and
a small element of oral tradition, whose results of reflection from the traditional to modern,
from West to East will be analyzed through a literary text. First of all, birds in Western and
Eastern culture in general, and in particular pike and beliefs like that will be mentioned
briefly. Traces of the tradition in the Thousand Cranes which is written Nobel Prize winner
Japanese author Yasunari Kavabata will be searched. Interpretation mode of a small part of
traditional culture in modern narrative fiction form will be discussed. |
