Description
Summary:The present paper describes the main steps retracing the emergence and development of the Algerian scientific research sector between 1962 and 1994. It also suggests answers to the following questions: did the post-independence research policy, particularly from 1971, allow for the development of the required autonomy for researchers ? What are the relationships between State and Science ? Which continuities and ruptures can be defined after the years 1960 ? Which are the obstacles towards a relative autonomy in scientific practices ? Using the study of a scientific association which has existed in Algeria for more than a century, this paper will try to show that science in Algeria reveals historical, socio-political, cultural and economic changes which have affected Algerian society since its origins ; it will also show the contradictions of politics towards science.
