Description
Summary:Based on letters from the Krzesiński family collection held at the Library of the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as Russian periodicals and other sources, the author reconstructs the details of jubilee celebrations in honour of the eminent dancer Feliks Krzesinski (1823–1905), investigating their circumstances, course, and reception. The event took place on 31st January 1888 (according to the Julian calendar) in Saint Petersburg, where the artist settled in 1852, after a successful career in the ballet of the Warsaw Government Theatres. The jubilee celebrated fifty years of his activity as an artist, including thirty-five years at Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre. The author of the article uses this opportunity to correct some inaccuracies perpetuated in narratives about ballet history, which often repeat blunders from original press accounts.
