description Our idea of peace can be expressed in latin through a whole array of terms. Pax is the most obvious candidate but, in some contexts, also otium, quies, tranquillitas and concordia can signify peace. Moreover, the idea of peace is linked to a series of more narrowly diplomatic terms like sponsio, pactio, societas, amicitia, foedus and indutiae. The article analyses the semantic field of Roman peace through a qualitative study on the basis of co-occurrences of these terms with pax.
