description There are many testimonies of the movement of people in the Middle Ages. Pilgrimage is one of the first causes of displacement. However, these pilgrims first and foremost had a spiritual purpose and not exploration through travel. They conform to symbolic rites, which has consequences on the narrative where the I disappears in favour of a collective us. Moreover, it is more a question of the traveller repeating what other pilgrims have written (through encyclopaedic, oral and lived sources) than of sharing a singular experience of the world.
