description | Abstract This module contains cases in cardiovascular medicine for use in a medical or other health profession curriculums. The suggested primary applications are in a medical physiology course or within the first- and/or second-year of an integrated curriculum that uses an organ- or system-based approach. The intent of these cases is to use a detailed, authentic clinical presentation to extend and reinforce the students' comprehension and application of basic medical science content. Each case provides an opportunity to integrate medical sciences with clinical medicine. Using this approach, we have been able to evolve from traditional discipline-specific didactic sessions to a format that stimulates the learning process by using small-group discussion and integrated clinical scenarios. We feel that this method addresses at least three important areas in early medical training: introduction to the level of knowledge necessary to provide quality patient care, the importance and significance of a firm understanding of basic science content in providing accurate diagnosis and treatment, and better preparing medical students for the level of knowledge that will be expected of them on the USMLEs. |
