Summary: | Aiming to contribute to understanding of how anthropologists’ knowledge is constructed in practice, I discuss in this article how they participate in the building of a « homosexual citizenship » in Brazil, as they move across the fluid boundaries between LGBT activism and academic reflection. I start from the premise that given its complexity, the involvement of anthropology in this process can be taken as a particularly useful case study for provoking a more general assessment of the “commerce” that takes place on the boundaries between politics and science. I pay special attention to two distinct historical contexts: the end of the 1970s and the middle of the 1980s, when the homosexual movement begins to be organized in Brazil; and the first decade of the 21st century when I undertook my own research. |
