description This article explores the world of the Parisian prisons’ suppliers from 1700 to 1789. These anonymous individuals and the documents they have left behind outline what may be defined as a prison economy. Their commercial activities within the capital’s gaols expose the financial operations of these Ancien Régime prisons and unveil the existence of a network between the city’s different establishments of confinement. Above all, these suppliers could sometimes become important agents of reform and innovation in the prison world. Therefore, they offer a new window by which we can try to better understand the evolution of the prison towards its contemporary penitentiary form.
