description | This article explores the world of the Parisian prisons’ suppliers from 1700 to 1789. These anonymous individuals and the documents they have left behind outline what may be defined as a prison economy. Their commercial activities within the capital’s gaols expose the financial operations of these Ancien Régime prisons and unveil the existence of a network between the city’s different establishments of confinement. Above all, these suppliers could sometimes become important agents of reform and innovation in the prison world. Therefore, they offer a new window by which we can try to better understand the evolution of the prison towards its contemporary penitentiary form. |
