Examples from the late 15th century show lamentations in a simple strophic form with strong orientation on cantus planus (tonus lamentationum). During the 16th century more elaborated cyclic forms had been composed - returning musical sets became paraphrased. They structure the musical cyclus while returning Jerusalem-sets have the function of a refrain. Cyclic elements are specific to the form of the lamentations. Many composers used them in a individual manner. |
