description There are two meanings for the terminology cyclic lamentations {Lamemtationes Jeremiae Prophetae): the liturgical cyclus combinâtes lections - number and the textportions of the lections differ by changing time and regions. But the focus of this essay lies on the musical cyclus. Returning musical sets or particels of sets will serve to structure and to attach the lamentation. Examples from the late 15th century show lamentations in a simple strophic form with strong orientation on cantus planus (tonus lamentationum). During the 16th century more elaborated cyclic forms had been composed - returning musical sets became paraphrased. They structure the musical cyclus while returning Jerusalem-sets have the function of a refrain. Cyclic elements are specific to the form of the lamentations. Many composers used them in a individual manner.
