Kenan Göçer’s new study titled What Did Yunus Emre Actually Say? is important in that it contains the possibilities of a new reading of the history of Sūfism. In this study, I will evaluate Göçer’s work as a case study, address some problems in the writing of Sūfi history, and finally offer some suggestions. Accordingly, I will point to archival historiography as a sine qua non for an interdisciplinary study on the history of Sūfism. However, I will point out that while relying on archival documents, the internal integrity of Sūfism should never be ignored. |
