Summary:This paper presents a review about an important, but often neglect, topic: the ‘starting education’, namely all educational and care arrangements for children from early months until the end of childhood. In fact, quality experiences in Early Childhood Education and Care (ecec) and primary school could fill, at least partly, the background gaps and place the foundations of lifelong learning. Nevertheless the starting education in most countries is underfinanced.The results of this review are contradictory: enthusiastic advices of positive effects of starting education meet widespread opinions which argue that the benefits of its strengthening wouldn’t be relevant and enduring without sweeping reform of scholastic system.
