description The article seeks an understanding of exceptional politics for the challenges of the Anthropocene. The Anthropocene is the contemporary geological epoch characterized by a profound human impact on the biological, chemical and physical composition of the Earth and by ecological emergencies. These include global warming, species extinction and pandemics. A recourse to classical theories of the political state of emergency is not helpful for an understanding of this present, because they put nature at a distance from society and conceive a non-democratic politics. An analysis of covid politics can contribute to a new understanding of exceptional politics in the Anthropocene.
