description Natural formations in a city have primary roles in the development of an urban identity and the city’s history. This article discusses Kanlıgöl (Bloody Lake), a long-forgotten district of Ankara between the historic train station and Sıhhiye district. Evidence is presented that demonstrates that the origin of the name Kanlıgöl derives from the presence of hot water spas and small lakes. In addition, other geological elements are described that may contribute to the urban identity of the city, such as Ankara’s streams, Ankara clay and Ankara stone.
