description During 2010 and 2011 we conducted a national survey on perceptions of Science and Technology (S&T) of Brazilian students, whose main purpose was to interpret the school's role in the formation of scientific culture. The research occurred by sampling in public schools in five regions (four in each region, totaling twenty schools) in two stages: quantitative and qualitative. The quantitative stage, which included the participation of 1,034 students, used a self-explanatory questionnaire as a method of data collection instrument, relating the experiences, interests, attitudes, choices and perceptions about S&T. In the qualitative stage, 338 students participated, where, through focus group discussions, it was possible to observe the opinions of the respondents and expand the understanding of the data collected in the quantitative stage. In this work we present the analysis related only to the perceptions that students in high school have about the subject environment.
