description Depending upon their demographic and economic weight, cities play a more or less important political role ranging from the local and regional level to the national and international one. This competition between cities is but a single aspect of urban geopolitics which develops in multiple forms within the agglomerations, particularly with respect to the dialectic relationship between the territory and power of municipalities comprising them. Actors, power relationships and political struggles, location conflict and planning issues are elements of geopolitical analysis in urban space. This analysis can be illustrated by four images: theatre or staging; battlefield where various strategies are deployed; a construction site where the agglomeration takes on the form of a geopolitical construct; a renewal project represented by territorial reform. In addition to being a geography of actors, issues and territorial conflicts, urban geopolitics is a geography of representations, i.e., of perception and image of the city, as well as geography of selection processes and distribution of political representation among the citizenry. Although urban geopolitics may not always be called such, it is nevertheless present in dispersed fashion throughout geographic publications. Eminently critical, urban geopolitics cannot remain indifferent to what citizens face and to the urban political struggles in which they are involved. In addition, the places where conflict occurs constitute rich sources of information about field work and the role of the actors. As a weapon to oppose the political system which manages and plans the quality of life in cities, urban geopolitics is also a means to formulate urban policies.
