| description | The analysis of public spaces names of potiguar cities or cities located in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, which consolidate slowly along the 19th century, contributes to reveal their growing importance. This article is an attempt to develop such an analysis, and it does so through the following procedures: 1) the selection of vilas and cidades in the State of Rio Grande do Norte and the names of their respective public spaces, gathered from available sources. 2) a classification of these same names through groups of meanings. 3) the identification of the frequency in which such names occur in each group. The analysis, comprising three chronological periods, 1830-1850; 1851-1880; 1881-1900, helped to understand the consolidation/growth of the potiguar city in the 19th century, as well as the social values inherent to those names. |
