description | The research uses the notarized acts for loans in the city of Valladolid/Morelia in Michoacán, México for the period between 1750 and 1860. With the data obtained in this source we analyzed different tendencies of this emerging agricultural credit system of loans supported with properties such as haciendas and ranches. We find that there is a growing demand for loans that stops with the independence war and grows back slowly until 1860. Considering some opinions of contemporary documents we suppose that at the time there was an inflationary movement, though hard to quantify, that pushed the producers to acquire more and more debt. The main issue is that we take into consideration for the first time the real interest rate and not only the nominal one. Afterwards we compared the movement of credit with some prices of basic foods to determine the rationality in the use of credit as a mean of capital investment. Finally we checked the gradual substitution of ecclesiastic credit with private until 1860 when the first one left the market and the second takes control shrinking it and restricting the access to only a few as a consequence of the economic policy of president Juarez. |
