Biomedical laboratory scientists' experience and benefits of teaching in interdisciplinary collaboration

Every year over 700 third-year students from nine different medicine, health and social studies participate for two days in an educational activity within integrated care, practised at the NTNU-Norwegian University of Science and Technology (“TverrSam”). description Every year over 700 third-year students from nine different medicine, health and social studies participate for two days in an educational activity within integrated care, practised at the NTNU-Norwegian University of Science and Technology (“TverrSam”). In the spring of 2016 a cross-sectional study was carried out, where all potential TverrSam participants in 2014-2016 (N=2044) were invited. One of the purposes of the study was to examine the experience and benefit of TverrSam for biomedical laboratory scientists (BLS) and students compared with the other participating professions. The response rate was 26%. Among the responders there were 63 BLS and 469 from other professions. The composition of sexes and professions in the group of respondents matched the composition of participants in TverrSam. The majority of BLS (70.5%) and the other professions (86.0%) recommend to continue with TverrSam. The BLS tended towards having a lower overall impression of TverrSam (adjusted odds ratio 0.4, 95% CI: 0.2-1.0, p=0.056). The odds of BLS to deem TverrSam not relevant for their study was 7 times as high as for the other professions (adjusted OR 0.1, 95% CI: 0.1-0.4, p<0.001). In summary, TverrSam was a useful and positive experience for those who participated, but the BLS experienced the education as less relevant for their own studies than participants from other professions do.
