description The article examines the current state of affairs in the education of Japan, highlights the main problems – both recently identified, that appeared in connection with various social phenomena of the 21st century, and existed for a long time, but “younger” or increased in scale. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the measures taken by the educational institutions under quarantine in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, and mainly, the process of introducing distance learning in Japan, as well as the reasons that prevent its rapid spread and mass use, among which are the specifics of the Japanese approach to education and collectives of students, as well as technical and managerial difficulties
