Description
Summary:Using the CCIJP datasets to analyse gender inequalities in journalism supposes mixing temporal scales. First, we propose to pair the description of the evolutions of the journalistic labour market with a longitudinal analysis of careers. The focus is then placed on a cohort – individuals entering the market in 2000 – to examine its members’ professional pathways and explore the effects of the recent changes faced by the profession. The feminization of journalism is concomitant with increased job insecurity. In that context, women are more exposed than their male colleagues; their careers are shorter and more discontinuous, have limited access to management and prestigious professional positions and are more often employed in flexible employment than men. Some cracks can be observed on the glass ceiling, however. But the success of women is more tightly linked to their educational background, and the valuation of discontinuous careers is expressed differently for men and women.
