The paper explores the potential documentary and communicative dimension of the literary text. Starting from the analysis of some of Corrado Alvaro's works concerning Calabria, his homeland, the author tries to deal with the main points of the, especially postmodern, debate that contraposed anthropologists and literary criticists.
Some characteristic oppositions of Corrado Alvaro's writing - magic realism/realism, particular/universal -, as well as his peculiar way of declining the place/memory relationship, make the author’s writing also interesting for the anthropologist.
