Description
Summary:Displaying four paintings depicting banquets and kitchen scenes, Shuhanron emaki illustrates a debate about different types of food (sake and rice or tea), behind which hide a religious dispute and a social competition. Quite famous among specialists of Japanese food history and culture for its so-called documentary value, this scroll most probably dates to the first half of the 16th century; but its anonymous text has not yet been much discussed and it raises many hermeneutical issues. Beyond the obvious food-centered theme and among many other possible interpretations, the dispute may actually offer a metaphoric transposition of the religious and social context of medieval Japan. This paper focuses on the text and attempts to determine its discursive strategy from a typologic point of view in comparison to other medieval works and genres.
