description Since the 2000s the ancient port of Bordeaux/Burdigala (Gironde) has been the subject of new studies, based on data provided by preventive archaeology. These data were incorporated into 3D modelling. This work, carried out as part of the creation of a multimedia module for the permanent of the Cité du Vin in Bordeaux, makes it possible to propose a realistic evocation of the inner port of the Late Roman Imperial period and to visualise the aspect of the port basin positioned at the mouth of the Devèze river and its channel opening onto the Garonne river. The rather small dimensions of the inner port, barely more than 1.50 ha at high tide, and barely 1 ha at low tide, had to be compensated for by the nature of its facilities and the way in which it affected the tidal range. The shoreline facilities had to allow for operation both at high tide, when mooring to unload planks directly onto the quay, and at low tide, when running aground on the shore to unload either by hand or with the help of lifting equipment. Despite its relatively big width, the passage of the channel was not always obvious to those who knew the power of the current on the Garonne river. It is therefore likely that boats intending to access the inner harbour had to dock along the banks before being guided by an experienced pilot.
