description Potential Genetic Benefits of Using Brazilian Cotton Varieties to Improve those Cultivated in the C4 Countries: 2. Analyze of the Technological Characteristics of the Fiber. Improving the competitiveness of African cotton sector must take into account both yield increase and fiber technology enhancement. In order to profit from Brazil experience in this field, through the C4 project, the current study compared fiber characteristics of some varieties from Brazil and the C4 countries plus Togo. The characteristics were measured on an integrated measuring chain of SOFITEX in Bobo-Dioulasso. The results show that African varieties (mainly FK37 and A 51) appear to be better than those from Brazil for the fiber length and fiber tenacity, regardless of the site and the year. The Brazilian ones are rather interesting for the maturity (BURITI and CEDRO), short fiber index (all the Brazilian varieties), and colorimetry (BURITI, BRS 286, ARACA). Compared to Brazilian cotton varieties, African ones can be enhanced in terms of colorimetry, one of the major attribute influencing the price of cotton fiber. However, it is essential that this improvement is not obtained to the detriment of the length and the fiber tenacity of African varieties.
