description This articles studies how emotions are expressed and produced during digital rectal examination. It aims to describe and explain men’s discomfort towards this exam as well as the unease it causes in the care relationship. The study relies on ethnographic observations in four public hospitals and semi-structured interviews of men with prostate cancer (N=55), relatives and health care professionals. In this article, emotions are analysed from two complementary perspectives. Firstly, emotions are seen as the product of social structure. That enables us to analyse digital rectal examination as a procedure anchored in the experience of subjects. Secondly, emotions are seen as the product of social relations. This perspective highlights the intersubjectivity of digital rectal examination
