| Summary: | Mahmud al-Kashgari’s Divanu Lügati’t-Türk is a unique study of the language, history and life of
Turkish communities. This work is considered as a reference source for many branches of science by
researchers working on dictionary science, while it is also argued that there are a lot of subjects within
the work need to be examined further. One of these issues is the words that indicate the measures used
in the period when the work was writeen in the Turkish language. The dictionary contains remarkable
information about the metric units used in the old and Middle Ages. In this article, we aimed to
investigate dimension names within the scope of dimension category and to specify their lexicosemantic characteristics and functions. In this article, we tried to analyze the names of measurement
by separating them into different semantic groups such as weight, distance, wage and specifying
semantic characteristics in each language. In addition, we believe that the process of returning to the
measurement units of body organs names and the natural ways of this transformation will support
the issue. The historical continuity of Modern Kazakh and the middle Century Turkish (10. and 12century.) proves its genetic kinship. In addition, it is observed that the middle Turkish period had a
rich and strong language in terms of linguistic units which expressed the meaning of size-measure.
When examining the words, this study will attempt to be presented as an important part of the middle
Turkish period in the dimension Category referenced. In this way, Divan-ı Lugat it-Turk, which is
used as a reference source in many researches on Turkish language and Turkish culture, will be able
to demonstrate that it is also an important source in the studies of linguistics. |
